More Actions and How to Load Actions

I just realized that in my last post, (Actions: where I listed some amazing actions from MCP) I never gave any instruction on how to load ACTIONS onto your computer and into your Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Some of you may know this, but for those of you who are just learning......This is for you.

Everyday Elements

This is my favorite site for teaching you how to load actions and for doing so many, many other things. It is different depending on if you have a MAC or PC. Follow these tutorials and you will be loving the new use of your actions.

ACTIONS!!

Have you heard about actions in Photoshop and Elements???

They are AM-A-ZING!

First you need to ask yourself when creating a layout......."Do I focus more on my layout paper, style, embelishments, and design, or do I focus more on the quality of my picture in the layout."

There really is no wrong answer here. Everyone is different and likes different things. I know for me, I want my pictures to be edited and look "Professional". The only problem is, the more I mess with photo editing, the worse my pictures look.

Actions are pre-saved..... well.....actions, that someone else has put together for you and saved and all you need to do is download them, install them, then run them (with the push of 1 button).

I do love finding TONS of available Digital Scrapbooking Freebies to do my much loved Digital Scrapbooking. Sometimes though, I just can't find exactly what I'm looking for AND I'm starting to create a lot more on my own.

For those of you who are daring to venture out on your own, or even just want to mess with your pictures a little bit before they are set in perfectly to your layout, I have got the site for you.

There are a lot of things on their site that are so fun and so great. Mountain of knowledge there. Some free, and some not so free. Here is one of their many great finds that is

Scrappers Guide has a tips and tricks section. I have LOVED every single tip that they offer. It makes my pages just a little more personable. Anyway, check them out. They have Photoshop version "How to-s" and also Photoshop Elements "How to-s". Its been fun and nice. Click on the picture to take you there.

Oh Ya, There are also PDF versions of everything so that you can always have it right in front of you. Enjoy!!

Dingbats

I feel like I should apologize for the double font post. I won't though, because this is really cool. Have you ever punched into your search bar......DINGBAT?

DINGBAT

You will be pleasantly surprised. Dingbats are a lot like fonts. Most dingbats are pictures, items, faces.....You name it, there is probably a dingbat for that.

You download them, then install them into your font folder in windows just like you do with fonts. I recommend saving all of your fonts and dingbats somewhere else as well so that if you ever need to reformat your computer, you can reload them fast and you don't have to try to remember where you got all of your fun fonts and dingbats. (Unfortunately, I speak from experience.) You can also refer to how to install fonts, from a previous post if you need to.

So, here's an example of some dingbats that I found online. (Not a great picture, I know).

There are so very many more. Download away. They are fun to use in scrapbooking too.

I also wanted to let you all know that Amanda at Kevin and Amanda posted a bunch of new Pea Fonts today. You can grab just the new ones, or if you have missed any of them in the past, you can download them all.

Baby Shower PARTY!!!!!

Baby Shower

I have an amazing Sister In Law. She is having her very first baby boy in April. All of the Sisters-in-law have decided that we are going to throw her a baby shower this weekend. I took on the responsibility of Announcements, Book of advice for her and a few other little things. So, to start out..........

Baby Shower Announcements.

I remembered that I posted a cuter than cute baby girl and boy kit a while ago that I really wanted to make some baby shower announcements with.

Here's the kit that I wanted to use.

(The kit can be found by clicking on the picture)

She posted this kit in 4 different parts on 4 different days. You'll have to go back to collect all 4 parts. But when you get them all, the kit as a whole contains all of the above.

Here's what I came up with for a baby boy shower invitation.

I know.... it's not the greatest picture, but the only picture I ever took was with my phone. I also had to blur some stuff out just to be safe. So, this is a diaper that I stuck an Avery sticker to. I made the invitations using the kit above, and printed them onto the Avery stickers, then tied some ribbon to the diaper.
Next, We wanted to have a book of advice for everyone to write down their amazing words of wisdom to her. (Because we all know that having at least one kid makes anyone an expert on what to share with others about child rearing.)

This is what I came up with for that.

For this book, I just picked up a kids cardboard book at a local thrift store. (Winnie the Pooh at Christmas time to be exact). After creating the pages, I printed them out and just glued them to the cardboard book pages. I also printed out some elements separate so that I could also stick those to the pages to give it more dimension. Then, when the book is all done, it became pretty thick so I added a ribbon to help hold it together.

If anyone is interested in the downloads, just let me know and I will email them or put them online for you.

.......BUT......

I still need your help.

This is going to be an open house. NO games everyone has to painfully sit through. I do want to do some fun time wasters though.

One would be to have everyone guess how much candy is in a jar at some point as they walk past the food table.

WHAT ELSE????? I need ideas. Things that could be fun, but you don't need a group sitting around to do it.

I’m finally announcing my new site.
I began this hobby at DignDesigns.blogspot.com. Now I have switched over to DignDesigns.com. I’m really excited to show you all of the new items I’ve added to this site. For today's favorite Freebie, I chose this great digital scrapbooking kit. I think it is very hard to find many things that work great with my boy layouts. This digi kit will make that adventure a little bit easier. I love the firetruck and cars. It really scream BOY to me. I can't wait to get it downloaded and try it out.

I frequently attend Digital Scarpbooking store/forum/gallery type sites. One of my most recent favorites is called DigiScrapStation. Not only do they have great forum feedback, sales and friendly gallery, and occasional scrapbooking freebie, they also have a weekly newsletter. In the last 2 newsletters, there has been talk about fonts.

Above, I have listed the font sites that were included with the latest newsletter. Head on over to the site to sign up for the weekly newsletter. Then you won't miss out next time they post again.

These font sites are really great. You may end up going sooo very crazy. Figure out how you will organize them, and again, if you need to know how to install them so that each new font can be found in each program on your computer, check out a previous post on how to install fonts.

Here are some great Scrapbooking Freebie Elements. Use them in any scrapbooking kit or layout that you have laying around. On this site I found a TON of elements you will want to go and download. Please, make sure you read the TOU (Terms of Use) in each download. They tell you what you are allowed to use these elements for, ex. S4H/S4O/CU/PU etc. If you are using these elements for yourself, you are probably ok, best to check the TOU, but if you are selling kits, Take a peek.

Retro Watermelon - Part 1 and Part 2 of Many

Great looking kit. I really like these colors together. The greens and oranges are amazing. I especially love the designs on the scrapbook paper background because not everyone does this. I don't think very many people will have background colors like this one in their layouts. You could have an original!!!

Different Anyway.
As I searched her scrapbooking blog, there were promises of many more "scrapbooking elements, and goodies to come" that would all fit together with these papers.

I only searched a few days back, so I'm not certain of everything she offers, but if you do search further back, I saw that she has some very cute scrapbooking templates, and QP's that are totally free to download.

Shadow House Creations - Layer Mask

I know these are hard to see here, but you will just have to take my word for it and head on over to this AMAZING site. Honestly, these are the prettiest layer masks that I have ever seen. I can't wait to put my kids pictures in them and make them so pretty. They download, and are saved as a png file, so all you have to do is open them up in any photo editing software (like Photoshop Elements) and bring in your picture. Rearrange the layers so that your photo goes under the layer mask. So easy!!! Jerry really has an amazing site. Check out the left hand side. There are so many more things that you will really enjoy. Great Tutorials, Free Textures, Fonts......TONS. You'll really love it.

Cooking Up a Storm - Brag Book

These guys have turned cooking into a digital scrapbooking adventure. I think you can incorporate Digital Scrapbooking into Anything and Everything. I LOVE IT!!

I know you are probably suppose to use these quick pages as recipe cards, but why stop there. I can't wait to use this small brag book and turn it into a non recipe related item. Why not a family vacation, a birthday party, or.........The pages are a small enough size that you can print it out on Card stock and give it as a gift to someone else. So many ideas. AND.......This is just the beginning. This is part one, which means there will be a part 2 and so on for the rest of the week. HORRAY!!

There is a difference between a scrapbooking Template and a Scrapbooking QP

Here is the definition, in my own words, of a Scrapbooking Template: A template is where the layout and shapes are already arranges on the page. You have to bring in your own PAPER and PHOTOS.

This is different than a QP (Quick Page): A quick page is where the paper is already provided and the layout is already arranged. You only need to bring in photos.

The pictures above are of Templates. The left hand column are the templates and the right columns are what was created from the template from bringing in your own paper and photos.

Does anyone know what a blog train is???

My understanding is: It's a group of people who all have a part, of say a kit, and they do their work and post it, and in the end there ends up being a TON of pieces that all sort of correlate together.

Making your own Blog Background

I remember wanting to create my very own HOME SLAVED blog background. I searched and searched and read and read. I even tried everything, I thought. Finally, I really did hit the jack-pot. I of course turned to my favorite lady. Amanda, at kevinandamanda.com. She gives the best tutorial on this. She uses a different program than I do, but it all makes sense and will work in any program.

The 1 thing that finally worked, that no other site had said to do was "ONLY WORK WITH PIXELS". Every other tutorial had me set up my pages in inches. It always left a white border around my background. Then, when I changed it to Pixels, it finally worked. Check it out and let me know how it works for you.

She even lets you download this background if you like it and don't want to make your own.

Backgrounds - in Crunch Time

There are some times when I really want to get a layout done FAST!! I don't necessarily have the time to go searching through all of the backgrounds that I have downloaded or created. In times like these, I have a GREAT secret.

Take pictures of ANYTHING and use the picture as a background. This way you even have colors that coordinate and it's right there in front of you. Here are some recent pictures I took for this very purpose. Granted, they aren't the best, but they worked for what I needed.

You may even want to mess with the opacity or make it into an overlay. The possibilities are endless, but now you have somewhere to start.

They do about 3 different webinars a month and you just have to sign up and then login when it is time to watch. I usually sign up for all 3 time slots, just in case my schedule gets busy and I am not able to attend one. I love these. I learn something new in Photoshop every time I attend. You do not have to be a paying member to attend the webinars either, but you do have the option to become a member and receive additional training for members only.

She even has a free template for every day of the year, to keep you journaling and to help keep track of each memory. So super easy to pop 1 picture in an already made page.

When we download Free kits that other people have made off of the web, there are certain rules that you have to abide by. Here are the rules that Brenda has posted in her January Newsletter.

UNDERSTANDING TOU'S

I have had several requests from people on how they can use my kits. Some wanted to use them for blog backgrounds, cards and invitation, scrap for others, and believe it or not - shoes. When it comes to my freebies, I am very easy going with how you use them, but I do like to know what your using them for. Some of my freebies can't be used for things like shoes.
A designer puts their TOU in with the zip files of their kits. They can, on alot of occasions be very confusing. I'm still confused alot of the time and end up having to email the designer to be sure I can use it the way I want to.
It would be great if there were a way to make the meanings like S4H/S40/CU/PU, and No Sharing universal. But at the moment, alot of the designers have their own way of defining these terms.
Here is a basic summary of those meanings.
TOU - Terms of Use This is a document that a designer uses to outline their terms of use for that particular product. ALWAYS read the enclosed TOU in each kit, element, paper, template, or CU item that you purchase. Every designer has a different take on what S4H/S4O/CU mean. In most TOU's you will find the designers name, email, and blog address. If you ever have a question about how you can use their kit, please email them and ask them if it's ok. Be as precise as you can on your intended use. Most designers I know will email you back letting you know if it's ok.
S4H - Scrap for Hire. If a kit is marked with this it means that you may use the kit to scrap for others and be able to charge for your services. As an example, if someone would like you to make a scrapbook for them, you can use the kit to make the scrapbook, and request a payment for your services. Most designers insist that anything you sell, be flattened. Individual designers have their own take on its meaning, always check the TOU!
S4O - Scrap for Others. If a kit is marked with this it means that you may use the kit to scrap for others as long as there is no monetary gain for you. If you want to scrap a page for your sister, simply because she isn't able, you can do this. You cannot charge for your services. Individual designers have their own take on its meaning, always check the TOU!
CU - Commercial Use The terms for these items are a little bit harder to understand. It is best if you read each individual TOU in**
PU - Personal Use This means exactly what it says. It is to be used for personal use only. You may not share this item with anyone. It is for the use of the person who purchases it.
DO NOT SHARE This is so important. Designers spend alot of time working on the items that they sell. Sharing their works is wrong, and illegal. This means if you download a kit, free or purchased, DO NOT make a copy of that item and send it to a friend, family member, group, or anyone. If you think someone might like a freebie you found, send them the blog or web address where you found it and have them download it from there. If you purchase a kit, do not give it to someone else so they can use it, send them to the store where you purchased it and let them purchase it for themselves.
" Please give credit where credit is due" - When you make a layout and post it on your blog or in a gallery give the designer(s) credit for their work. When I make a layout using someone's kit I usually put something like this in the credits. I used the kit, (kit name), by (Designer Name)
If you use more than one kit: The paper is by (Designer Name) from her kit (Kit Name) The flower is by (Designer Name) from her kit (Kit Name) Everything else is from (Designer Name) from her kit (Kit Name)

Here is a free template. It is so cute! I decided to try it out to see how easy it would be. I LOVED IT!!!! It honestly took 20 second to pop 3 pictures of the kids playing in the snow. Add some simple text and within less than 2 minutes you have a new layout ready to display.

Don't forget to use the password WINTER when downloading this. The kit they use below the template is not free, but this template is. Have fun.

How To Install Fonts

Before I share with you my other favoite fonts, I wanted to give a little bit of information about how to save fonts.

If you are using Windows Vista:

Select the font files (.ttf, .otf or .fon) then Right-click > Install

Under any version of Windows: Place the font files (.ttf, .otf or .fon) into the Fonts folder, usually C:\Windows\Fonts or C:\WINNT\Fonts (can be reached as well by the Start Menu > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes > Fonts).

This way the fonts are saved in your computer and now they can be accessed from any and all Word Processing Programs on your computer. I also learned the hard way to save the fonts on my external hard drive so that if my computer crashes, I still have them saved somewhere, and I can just replace them, instead of trying to remember where I got them all.

Printing Scrapbooking Pages

Printing really depends on the size of your pages and what you plan on doing with them. I once looked into getting a printer that would print 12 X 12 pages for me. I finally realized that the printer cartridges are VERY expensive and they sell each color separately so you are constantly buying more cartridges.

If you are working with an 8 1/2 11, you can print from home. (I am assuming that you have a decent printer that will print pictures well.)

I usually make all of my pages in 12 x 12 sizes for my scrapbooks. I take them to a local copy center. They always print on a 12 x 18 size paper, so I have started making my scrapbook pages different. I have a 12 x 12 at the top and then copy 2 smaller 6 x 6 for the bottom. Now I get double the copies for the same price. Here is an example.

I use the two small pictures for Grandmas or the kids for their own books.

You can also find many places that will let you upload them onto their websites. They will then print them and send them to you in the mail. I've heard this is a great service and fairly inexpensive, but I prefer to go to the copy center myself. My copies range from $1.10-$3.00/copy depending on the paper quality.

Digital Pictures

I know a lot of people have digital cameras lately, which make it very easy to already have your pictures digital in order to scrapbook digitally. If you don't you need to scan them in somehow. Any copy center will let you take your pictures to them and they will let you scan them onto a flash drive. It's very simple and then you don't have to worry about the huge cost in getting a digital camera right now, that is until you find out THAT YOU LOVE DIGITAL SCRAPBOOKING. Oh yes, it will happen. I will let you find out in your own time and not try to talk you into it so fast. tehehe.!!

There are so many choices when you finally think you are ready to move on. This level also comes with a bit of commitment because there is quite a bit of jump in price. This is where I started with my digital scrap booking. I knew that I loved computers and had to be on them somehow. I wasn't sure if I wanted to invest a ton of money into the hobby just yet. You have two options.

Free software downloads offered on the Internet, or less expensive programs that have template pages. You just need to pop your pictures in and rearrange, add, delete, or do nothing.

My favorite template (it also lets you start from scratch) software is Scrapbook Factory Deluxe. Amazon has is for around $23.00 after rebate. I wouldn't pay more than $30 when trying to decide if you will even like this. Some other favorite, less expensive software packages are

OK, so here are a few of my favorite sites that I have used in the past. They are sites that have books already put together with cute colors and backgrounds for you. All you need to do is plop in your pictures, maybe change a color here or there, (or maybe just change a theme, and the whole book theme changes). These are very fast and make it easy when you are trying to put a book together for grandparents, weddings, reunions, or vacation and you don't have the time to spend on every single page separately.

Here are my favorite, but I know there are a ton more sites out there. The prices vary a ton depending on what type of cover you get and depending on how many pages you have. Just do a search on Photo Books and you will see many, many options.
